Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to a set of
technologies through which "intelligent machines are gaining the ability
to learn, improve, and make calculated decisions in ways that enable them to
perform tasks previously thought to rely solely on human experience,
creativity, and ingenuity (International Telecommunications Union, 2017). AI
can bring advancements to the health sector, education, food security, and
crisis management, among others, in developing nations. These advancements,
however, come with risks that need to be mitigated by well-drafted policies and
regulations (ITU News, 2018). It also presents challenges, including the way it
affects the workforce, the ethical implications of some of its applications,
and the need for capacity-building, which would fundamentally alter the type of
education needed for the following generation (Susar & Aquaro, 2019).
