THE NIGERIA GOVA AND GMO

It’s funny how we’re not noticing that our local Gova fruit is being replaced by GMO varieties. When you go to the market, you rarely see our native Gova fruit for sale.

Even seeing the tree bear fruit feels almost like a mystery now. You can walk kilometers from one end of a street to another and not spot a single Gova tree.

This is something we once saw in almost every compound. Nigerians have cut down these trees to make space for interlocking stones.

The seedless GMO Gova emerged in the early 2000s, and we thought it was wonderful to enjoy seedless fruit. The consequence; We no longer have the seeds. Meanwhile, the foreign corporations promoting GMOs saved our original seeds years ago.

This means we’ll eventually set aside billions of dollars from our national budgets to repurchase seeds that were once native to Nigeria from abroad.

Until the moment when will shall dance in white Greater Grace.
