PAUL BIYA OF CAMEROON

The Enduring Rule of President Paul Biya of Cameroon

At 92 years old, President Paul Biya of Cameroon continues his tenure, which now extends over five decades, solidifying his position as one of Africa's longest-serving rulers.

On social media, many express bewilderment, asking how Cameroonians continue to elect a leader of such advanced age. To clarify this perception, it is critical to state that the people of Cameroon are not the primary architects of this prolonged rule. Instead, it is perpetuated by a complex system of corruption, tribalism, and the geopolitical interests of international allies.

When one examines President Biya's achievements during his earlier years in office, the parallels with the current celebration of the young military leaders in Niger Republic are striking. This serves as a cautionary tale. Holding power requires immense humility, discipline, and a genuine love for one's country to relinquish it voluntarily.

There is a dangerous pattern where new leaders, much like these young generals, begin with popular mandates to fight corruption and reclaim national sovereignty. However, without strong democratic institutions, they often risk evolving into lifelong rulers or establishing new systems of corruption themselves.

The critical question for the Niger Republic and similar nations is, what is the clear and timely plan for a transition to democratic, civilian government? Today's supporters, who celebrate the overthrow of a corrupt regime, may very well become the activists fighting the new junta in 30 or 40 years.

This cycle underscores a fundamental political truth; the weakest democracy is inherently superior to the most efficient military rule.

Until the moment when will shall dance in white Greater Grace.
