JUSTICE FOR OCHANYA OGBAJE
The Story of Ochanya Ogbaje (A Call for Justice)
Ochanya Ogbaje was a bright and hopeful young girl from Benue State, Nigeria. In search of a better education, she went to live with a relative, a decision her family made with hope for her future.
Tragically, the home that was meant to be a place of opportunity became a place of profound suffering. For years, Ochanya endured repeated abuse at the hands of the man entrusted with her care, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor.
The prolonged abuse severely damaged Ochanya's health. By the age of 13, she developed a grave medical condition known as Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF), a direct result of her trauma. After a brave struggle, Ochanya passed away on October 17, 2018.
Her death sparked national outrage and shed a light on the silent epidemic of child sexual abuse. The public demand for accountability was captured in the powerful cry, #JusticeForOchanya. Her case led to legal proceedings against her abusers and ignited a crucial national conversation about the need to protect children and believe survivors.
Though her life was cut short, Ochanya’s story continues to be a solemn reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard the vulnerable and to fight for a world where every child is safe.
Until the moment when will shall dance in white Greater Grace.
