PRIVATE SCHOOLS AND UNCESSARY STUDENT CLOTHING

The issue with some private schools is becoming increasingly burdensome for parents. First, they design uniforms that are unavailable in the open market. Then, they mandate specific textbooks that can only be purchased from the school at exorbitant prices.

Now, their latest strategy is to introduce unnecessary specialized clothing for every school day. Each day has a specific outfit sports kit, house wear, "colour" day attire, Thursday wears, all of which must be bought exclusively from the school at inflated rates.

They often hide behind the banner of "quality education," but these practices seem more like money making schemes.

The ironic thing is that many of today's leaders in government, banking, and our stock exchanges are products of public schools. So, for those spending millions per term in private schools, where is the tangible output of this premium education? Where are the groundbreaking scientific inventions from these exclusive alumni.

To be clear, I am not against private schools. My own child attends one and will graduate from one. They do a great job in maintaining standards and ensuring graduates are proficient unlike the tragic stories of public school graduates who sometimes struggle with basic literacy. The failing state of public education is a discussion for another day.

My critique is specifically aimed at the policies of certain private schools that create artificial scarcity and impose unnecessary costs, making access to basic school materials difficult and unfairly expensive for parents.
